Do we all agree that demon math is the only subject most students flunk in? I do agree that most of the students are unable to clear their Maths paper in their SSC exams. In fact, the Maharashtra Education Minister claims that many students have given up their studies after failing the subject Math’s repeatedly.

Its true that with each passing day the exam burden on students is increasing and modest student’s community is under enormous stress and strain because of the exam pressure but I think and even most of you would agree its not Math, it’s the increasing competition that is the root of all the anxiety. I would strongly disagree with the Maharashtra Education Minster as he has put the whole blame on Mathematics and tagged this subject as ‘monstrous Maths’ .

Maharashtra Education Minster Prof Vasant Purke may think that he has done good for students even all the students who hate Math’s, may regard this news good for them but infact this is not the real; solution of this problem.

The State government department in Maharashtra has proposed to make maths optional after Std VIII and in its place offering subjects like computer science, agriculture and handicrafts instead and public opinion in this regard will be requested as well.

Mathematics in today’s tech savvy world is very important in all walks of life and just because students are fumbling in this subject is not an valid reason to make this subject optional.

Mr. Minister, I suggest some solutions to this grave problem -

o Make Kids learn Math’s from very begging adopting fun ways like- quizzes, riddles, Games involving Number Skills, Shape and Space Skills, Measure Skills.
o Introducing applied maths.
o Practical and project work for maths on the lines of science can be initiated in schools so that students are able to understand
o Learn the subject not only by proper route but through applications as well
o Basics of most of the students are not clear so that it should be ensured that their basics are clear and they grasp them well only then their foundation will be strong
o Regular practice should be ensured by parents and teachers

Running way from problem or cutting the affected part is not the solution of problem. Maths cannot be left out of the curriculum. Removing maths will only make the future generation of this country unskilled and incompetent.

It is about the last point that I want to comment.
It is quiet sad that the kind of mathematics that is taught at the school level should emphasize on practice.
Mathematics is essentially about finding patterns and making logical connections. It should not be drilled into their heads, this is the last thing one would want to do to a mathematical brain. Habit dulls the mind.

Well if Maths is made simple like what Sagar has said then what will happen to the income of lakhs of school teachers who earn a hefty sum taking tutions

I am not talking about simplifying math. Im talking about a change in the way people look at math in india. The concept of ’reading’ a math textbook is totally extinct in this country’s schools.

I dont really know the scenario with tutions and hence can’t comment on that one. But the quality of math in the country certainly holds a grater priority than the incomes of teachers who take tutions.
