Until now we all were worried for the fact that the school education has so much privatized that the government schools is left as an option for only those who cannot afford private school high fee packages.



However, private colleges are mushrooming in every street corner of south India. Dr S Kumar spokesperson, consortium of medical, engineering and dental colleges said:

We’ve had a big boom, 300 institutions in the last one and half years. You should have heard that in nursing education. If we are the Silicon Valley of India, the government’s contribution to that has been just one engineering college in 50 years. The remaining is from private sector.

In south India, numbers speak for themselves. Cities are witnessing corporatisation of education at a faster pace then ever. Moreover, almost every institute is running various other colleges as per the demand and the result is evident- whopping 260 engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu, 216 in Andhra Pradesh and 120 in Karnataka.



Two points:

1. Is the government actively monitoring the private institutions to ensure quality service?

2. If the private sector has the money, why can’t the government think along the lines of public-private partnerships to open up more colleges thorughout the country?
