The world’s largest chipmaker Intel is going to help in making Pune to be the country’s first Wi-Fi enabled information technology city. This project will be first of its kind. The project is expected to be commissioned in a year’s time; would offer Wi-Fi connectivity to approximately a 400 sq km area, including Pune city, Pimpri-Chinchwad and information technology pockets such as Hinjewadi. The initial investment in the project is estimated at Rs 7 crore.
Pune incidentally has the largest Internet-user base in the country, and connectivity indoors as well as on the roads is equally desirous for the city’s tech-savvy population. Payment system for all these services will be advance as well, it will be as same as using recharge cards for your mobile phone bill payments.
PMC Commissioner Nitin Kareer said.
We are visualizing a wire free city in which reliable Internet access would be available to everyone. For this we have entered into a tie-up with Intel Technology India Pvt. Ltd. PMC proposes to deliver easy, seamless Internet connectivity to its citizens, businesses and academic institutions across the 400 square km area of the city.
I think the project is basically an extension of the efforts undertaken by the city corporation to create facilities for the economic development of the city. All Pune citizens, be ready to enter the hi-tech orb in a year’s span.
So, do we see Pune becoming India’s first Wi-Fi city? As it looks now, it is well on the way of winning the race.
