The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has planned to make some important changes to the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995, and the existing telecom licenses, in an attempt to smooth the progress of growth of IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) services in India.
Television broadcasters here in India since long are trying to keep IPTV within the territory of the laws that govern Cable TV, on the other hand TRAI too is trying hard and adamant that IPTV services should not fall under Cable TV laws.
TRAI is of the strong view that IPTV would infringe certain provisions of the existing Cable Television Networks Act.
I think that they have even valid reasons to think like this as different providers would mean different protocols in IPTV services, and if seen by and large, then we can say ‘lack of standardization’.
